4 French-Inspired Twists for Halloween Celebrations

Although Halloween is more popular in the States than in France, the notion of dressing up, celebrating, and drinking to a good time on October 31st is becoming increasingly popular amongst younger generations—and though the holiday’s roots are undeniably American, adding a twist of French flair to your upcoming parties is never a bad idea. Not sure where to begin? Check out our tips for adding a taste of France to your hair-raising celebrations this upcoming Halloween season here.

Celebrate Fall Flavors with Crowd-Pleasing French Bites

No party is complete without a solid lineup of wine and snacks, and France happens to excel in both of these categories. Start by livening up your standard cheese board with some Halloween colors, like bright orange Mimolette and cheese with an ash-coated rind like Valencay Cheese PDO or Sainte Maure de Touraine PDO.

Beyond base ingredients, whipping up some flavorful French recipes is a surefire way to keep your fête guests coming back for more. For something quick and easy, a savory Shallot Tatin is a seasonal snack that’s both versatile and simple to serve, as well as easy to enjoy while standing and mingling. To get your guests involved in the fun, crafting Mini Halloween Pumpkin Surprises together is a great way to celebrate fall, as well as keep the fête interactive. Lastly, in addition to classic Halloween candy, throw some Puffs with Chantilly and Chocolate Sauce in the mix to keep the French theme going strong.

Don’t Forget the Wine!

In terms of wine, there’s no better time to pop a refreshing and food-friendly bottle from Beaujolais AOC. Beyond Beaujolais, look for light-bodied, chillable reds from across France to pair with essentially every fall flavor incorporated in your snack lineup. Check out Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Pineau d’Aunis from the Loire Valley, or other high-acid, low-tannin red suggestions.

A fuller-bodied white wine promises to pair perfectly with pumpkin treats – look for Rhône Viognier or Loire Chenin Blanc. And for candy and dessert pairings, reach for a bottle from Sauternes (Bordeaux), or a fortified Vin Doux Naturel from the south of France.

Rock a French-Inspired Halloween Costume

Beyond the “stereotypical Frenchie” costume—cue the berets, striped marinière shirts, and scarves—a myriad of other creative costume ideas also exists, many of which can be DIYed, too! Looking to iconic French figures is always a good idea – think La Marianne, Coco Chanel, or Marie Antoinette, or simply emulate your favorite French movie characters (Amélie, anyone?) Beyond personalities, dressing up as iconic French symbols and food items, such as the Eiffel Tower, a macaron, or a bottle of bubbly Champagne, also opens up a world of creativity.

Add Ambiance with Simple French Decor

While France tends to lean more chic than spooky, who says you can’t mesh the two for a fabulous Halloween fête? Add to your ambiance by scattering a few eerie French books around your room (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, Les Fleurs du Mal, etc.), make some DIY decorations—a simple Joyeux Halloween sign will go a long way—and you’re off to a great start!
